Benwerrin Park Clydesdale
Stud was founded in rural western Sydney in 1981 by Heather and Philip Oxenham.
The Oxenham’s had had a long history in breeding and riding light horses for
many years prior to altering course and purchasing their first Clydesdale.
“Rhine Valley Angel” a beautiful young filly, was purchased from the Annual
Wodonga Clydesdale Sale, run by the NSW Clydesdale Society in 1982.
Angel,
as she was affectionately known, was much loved for her serene temperament
particularly with the family’s three young daughters. The children spent many
years side by side Angel learning about these gentle giants and having fun. The
Stud showed Angel for many years and bred several foals. By this time the family
was hooked on Clydesdales.
Benwerrin Park Clydesdale
Stud purchased “McMurchie Felicity” from the McMurchie Stud, in Walla Walla, and
this commenced a sequence that saw a new filly or two purchased each year.
As time went on the stud
bred more foals and they were quite successful in the show ring. Following their
success and great joy in and outside the show ring, the Stud purchased a young
foal from the Dakota Stud from western NSW. “Dakota Jodie” who was very
successful in the show ring and allowed the entire family to be involved, with
the children leading her in the Junior Handler section at Sydney Royal Easter
Show with great success for eight consecutive years.
Over many years Benwerrin
Park has also focused on breeding its own progeny. “McMurchie Felicity” one of
the foundation mares, bred some distinguished foals including “Benwerrin Park
Trinity”. “Trinity” won Yearling colt going on to become Best Yearling and
Reserve Champion Stallion / Colt at the 1998 Sydney Royal Easter Show. Trinity
continued his success for many years and was never ranked out of the top three
places.
“Benwerrin
Park Calais” (full sister to Trinity), was awarded second in the Brood Mare at
Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2002. “Dakota Jodie” also won her class as a
Yearling and Best Yearling in 1992 at Sydney.
Progeny of “Felicity” have also done very well at
various Royal shows around the country.
“Trinity” and “Calais” are both by a Colt bred by Benwerrin Park.
“Benwerrin Park McIntyre” was by a “Roughland
Telstar"
stallion “Coldstream McKenna” out of a “Roughland Telstar” mare “Stanhope Park
Pearl”. McIntryre won Yearling colt at Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1994.
